The 2010 Caselberg Trust Broad Bay School Prize in Poetry went to Beth Garey for her poem ‘Path’

Michele Powles, 2010 Burns Fellow, judged the entries and commented on Beths winning work, “There is something very evocative in this piece. Its simplicity is deceptive and its sparse words bring about a real sense of place and person.”

Trust Patron, Dame Gillian Whitehead, presented Beth with a certificate and $50 in book tokens at the school’s end of year awards ceremony on 16 December.

Joint Runners-Up were Feng Goldsmith and Ruby Nicholas and each received a certificate and $25 in book tokens. Both poems titled ‘Marae’ and were written following a school visit to the Tamatea Marae, Otakou.

There were 3 Highly Commended Poems: ‘Fantail’ by Taj Kibieks, ‘Life on the Coast’ by Feng Goldsmith and ‘Broad Bay’ (author yet to be confirmed).

The Broad Bay School has a strong commitment to the Arts and students have been encouraged to cherish words, to imagine, to create and to explore their world through poetry. The Caselberg Trust established in 2009 an annual Prize in Poetry.
