We are excited to be holding a major fundraising event for the Trust this year. Blue Oyster Art Project Space are hosting “Place Matters” Art Auction on Saturday 11th November. There will be an opening on Friday 10th November at 5.30pm to view the works available, and Ronald Proctor will be our auctioneer on the day. Doors will open on Saturday at 5.30pm with the auction commencing at 6.00pm. As we get closer to the auction images of works included will be published on this site, and a catalogue will be made available to download. Barry Cleavin, our own renowned committee member and artist extraordinaire best describes the event and how it came to be with the following words.
The auction has been born from the necessity for such as the Caselberg Trust to raise funds as an activity adjunct to its altruistic purpose. One of the salient features of the Auction / Presentation is to bring something of the most significant artists living outside Dunedin’s ( more intimate in scale ) musings to Dunedin.
Each of the invited artists received a bare MDF ( composite wood with rounded corners ) rectangular place mat. There was no suggested ‘theme’ – just the MDF surface to be treated according to the artist’s disposition. The response to this by (40+) a notable echelon of geographically outside Otago artists shows and attests to both the generosity of the artists involved and a solidarity that shows that Dunedin, the ‘PLACE MATTERS’.
Art auctions are not unusual. This one though is dedicated to the Caselberg Trust and Dunedin. 60% of the funds raised on any works sold at auction will be returned to the artists although several have waived this return to them in favour of the Trust and / or have become subscribing members to the Trust. Funds raised will contribute towards the upkeep of the Caselberg Cottage in Broad Bay and the recently commissioned (Charles Brasch) Studio. The Auction promises to be an intriguing, unique and quality assured event.
Some items have been received so far from Josh Bashford, Roger Boyce, Tim Bright, Dick Frizzell, Richard Killeen, Peter McKay, Ben Reid, Michael Springer, Phillip Trusttum, Marty Vreede, Grant Whibley. These, as a small sample of the names attached to the works received so far, superb.
