2024 Caselberg Trust Margaret Egan Cities of Literature Writers Residency

Alison Glenny

The Caselberg Trust and Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature are pleased to announce that the Caselberg Trust Margaret Egan Cities of Literature writers resident for 2024 will be poet Alison Glenny. Alison was selected by the judges from a strong field, and will be welcomed to the Caselberg House in Whakaohorahi/Broad Bay from the start of November till mid-December this year.

Alison, who lives on the Kāpiti Coast, has previously published two collections of poetry including an Antarctic-themed collection of prose poems and fragments The Farewell Tourist which was awarded the Kathleen Grattan prize for a collection of poetry and was published by Otago University Press in 2018.  Her third collection is forthcoming in 2024 with Compound Press.

Alison says ‘For me the residency offers a period of uninterrupted time to focus on the early stages of bringing a new project into being. I also value the opportunity to spend time in Ōtepoti/Dunedin and to deepen my connections with the writing community there, to experience the inspiring environment of Caselberg House and its surroundings, and to join the community of writers who have benefitted from the legacy and generosity of Margaret Egan.’

The Caselberg Trust Margaret Egan Cities of Literature Writers Residency is run jointly and collaboratively by the Caselberg Trust and Dunedin UNESCO City of Literature. Funding from the Caselberg Trust is provided through a generous bequest by the late Margaret Egan.
Dr Janet Downs, Caselberg Trust Chairperson says “We’re delighted to announce that Alison will be our Margaret Egan resident this year, and are very much looking forward to her being at the Caselberg house in Broad Bay later this year.’

This is the second year of the residency, which alternates each year between writers from Aotearoa New Zealand and international writers from other UNESCO Cities of Literature.

The aim of the six week long residency is to provide writers with an opportunity to work on a substantial piece of creative writing and to foster connections among creative writers in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally. There are no limits in terms of genre, language, or length of writing, and completion of the project during the Residency is not a requirement.
