Victoria McIntosh begins her Creative Connections Residency

Dunedin based sculptor/jeweller Victoria McIntosh begins her 3 month Caselberg Trust Creative Connections Residency 2017 at the Caselberg House in Broad Bay on Sunday 1 April.

Victoria graduated from Otago Polytechnic School of Art in 2005, and describes her work as “weaving itself between jewellery and small scale sculptural works”. Her Caselberg Creative Connections residency project Time for Tea? will build upon the theme of recent work shown in her solo shows Burnt (2016) and Blemish (2014), both at Masterworks Auckland.

“A pot of tea, scones, and a red formica table……. all the ingredients required to start a revolution” says McIntosh, whose project will focus on constructing a series of small sculptural objects, and on hosting a series of afternoon teas with local women, providing opportunities to discuss her latest project that questions body image and expectation, impending middle age, and what full time feminism might look like.

“In Victorian times the taking of tea provided the freedom for women to gather unchaperoned – no doubt the hot bed for many a suffragette plot!! So what would our great grandmothers make of our lives today?” adds McIntosh

Invitations to attend Time for Tea? will be posted onto the Trusts website and Facebook page, and provide opportunities for attendees to share stories, which McIntosh will use to weave narratives into her work. The project will conclude with a Dunedin based exhibition and a show at Avid in Wellington and Masterworks in Auckland.

The Caselberg Trust Creative Connections residency is specifically targeted for projects that reach out and make links across a variety of creative media, and professional disciplines, and/or to communities relevant to the planned project. Previous Creative Connections Residents have been Megan Jane Campbell (2012) and Pacific Underground (2013), Alex Taylor (2015), Becky Cameron (2016). Applications for the 2018 residency will be open from Sunday 25 June, and information about how to apply will be posted on the Trusts website www.caselbergtrust.org

The Caselberg Trust purchased the Broad Bay, Dunedin home of the late John and Anna Caselberg in 2006, with the aim of hosting creative residencies in the house. Since inception, the Trust has held a variety of creative projects and events, as well as hosting a number of well-known New Zealand writers and artists at the cottage.
